FIT4REUSE Work Packages describe the activities that will take place in order to achieve the objectives of the three pillars of the project. Five WPs are technological and are developing solutions for treatment of non-conventional water resources or their application in the relevant environment. In particular, WP2 and WP3 are dealing with nature-based and intensive solutions for municipal wastewater treatment, WP4 with desalination technologies and WP5 with integration of solutions developed in WP2-3 and simulation of technologies from WP2-4. WP6 will test treated effluents produced with FIT4REUSE technologies and explore possibilities for their application in agricultural irrigation or for aquifer recharge.
As for non-technological WPs, apart from WP1 that will focus on the project management, they will provide the basis for further development and replicability of FIT4REUSE technologies in the Mediterranean area and beyond. WP7 will assess impacts of non-conventional water resources from a holistic point of view, while WP8 will develop a specific tool in order to ensure exploitation of FIT4REUSE solutions and legal framework that sees treated wastewater and desalted water as valuable resources. Finally, WP9 will be dedicated to communication and dissemination of the project achievements.
Objectives
General objective: to ensure the smooth realisation. It will be achieved through specific objectives:
- to coordinate and supervise the project research and innovation activities to be carried out according to the work plan, also by monitoring and ensuring quality and timing of project deliverables;
- to carry out the overall administrative and financial management and reporting of the project;
- to manage contacts with the PRIMA Foundation, the project officer and establish effective internal and external communication;
- to resolve possible conflicts.
Objectives
General objective: to design, setup, improve and optimize nature-based solutions focusing on single stage and hybrid constructed wetlands systems for municipal wastewater treatment and safe reuse in agriculture.
It will be achieved through specific objectives:
- To optimize constructed wetlands systems for municipal wastewater treatment in south Mediterranean areas;
- To improve energy efficiency as well as the recovery of nutrients and the removal of pharmaceuticals, emerging pollutants and pathogens;
- To assess and compare toxicity, eco-toxicity and phyto-toxicity of treated effluent.
Objectives
General objective: to study, develop and validate intensive and engineered bio-, membrane- and/or nano-technologies for energy- and carbon-efficient municipal wastewater treatment and safe reuse in agriculture.
It will be achieved through specific objectives:
- To optimize intensive anaerobic wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery in south and north Mediterranean areas;
- To enhance removal of pharmaceuticals and toxic compounds by membrane and nano-technologies;
- To assess and compare toxicity, eco-toxicity and phyto-toxicity of treated effluent.
Objectives
General objective: to decrease energy consumption and improve the brine management for better sustainability and resource recovery of the desalination process.
It will be achieved through specific objectives:
- To decrease the energy consumption by implementing Pressure Wave Generator (PWG), NF/RO combination and Photovoltaic cells;
- To improve the disposed RO and NF/RO brine quality to achieve more sustainable process;
- To improve Mg-P fertilizer recovery and minimize the disposed brine quantity.
Objectives
General objective: to study removal efficiencies, energy and cost saving performances of combinations of technologies developed in WP2, WP3 and WP4 with installed pilot plants and through modelling for the targeted reuse options.
It will be achieved through specific objectives:
- To investigate the optimum combination of the developed technologies at different regions with different reuse requirements;
- To establish a simulation platform in order to predict the behaviour of the technologies developed in WP2, WP3 and WP4, individually or as integrated systems;
- To produce the necessary input for the sustainability improvement scenarios developed in WP7.
Objectives
General objective: to study the use of high-quality water (coming from previous WPs) in irrigation, fertigation and aquifer recharge, as direct and indirect water reuse schemes.
It will be achieved through specific objectives:
- To optimise SAT systems in order to increase infiltration rate;
- To study effects of non-conventional water resources on soil, crops and drainage water;
- To develop supporting guidelines for practitioners in the use of non-conventional water resources.
Objectives
General objective: To assess the sustainability of the diverse unconventional water resource systems and identify improvement options, especially with regard to the factors driving community opposition to unconventional water resources application.
It will be achieved through specific objectives:
- To develop an operational methodological framework to analyse the triple bottom line impacts of different unconventional water reuse systems;
- To analyse baseline scenarios of FIT4REUSE systems and identify impact hotspots of selected technologies and applications;
- To identify potential improvements in the sustainability of FIT4REUSE systems by assessing alternative/integrated scenarios.
Objectives
General objective: To focus on the exploitation of the results of the previous WPs. The exploitation should be useful for the analysis of market potential, to develop scenarios to inform policy makers, train selected stakeholders, and increase the public acceptance of non-conventional water resources.
It will be achieved through specific objectives:
